Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is often thought of as a treatment for mild psychopathology; however, as Ellyn Saks calls attention to in an opinion piece in The New York Times (see link to the article under Useful Links) it has a vital place in the treatment of severe mental illness, including schizophrenia. While medication also plays a necessary role, a psychotherapeutic relationship can help to deal with stressors that might otherwise lead to hospitalization as well as work and relationship impairment.
